Senegal : FAPAL

The context: In the North of Senegal the lack of rain during the seeding period regularly entails shortages of basic food products.

Copyright SOS Faim - All rights reservedA project to assist the local population:FAPAL regroups about 2.000 families from 30 villages. Their food security is ensured by village shops offering rice, maize, millet, peanuts, oil, sugar and flour. They provide the villagers with food products when the drought provokes a bad harvest. Besides, thanks to the shops women no longer have to walk long distances to fetch food for their families.

Moreover, FAPAL reinforces the agricultural production. It fights against desertification (through reforestation) and promotes market gardening which enables the farmers to improve their nutrition and at the same time their income by selling products.

Shops which give results: Today, there are 24 village shops that enable entire villages to avoid starvation.

FAPAL (Federation of Louga’s peasants’ associations) works on enhancing crop production and it runs village shops to ensure the local population an easier access to food.
