FAMILY FARMING IN THE DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world with the greatest gender inequalities. However, the country has very important natural resources: the nature of the soil, forests, natural gas and oil.
Although 65% of the population is rural and practises mainly family subsistence farming, the national agricultural policy does not consider family farming as an engine of development and it does not benefit from public or private investment. Instead of giving priority to the development of local agriculture, the State resorts to massive food imports.
The Work of sos faim in the drc
Since the early 1980s, SOS Faim has been supporting family farming in the DRC in order to fight poverty and food insecurity in rural areas.
We collaborate mainly with farmers’ organisations and their federation as well as with a local development NGO.
Our action in the DRC aims to develop an agroecology center in order to promote a sustainable agriculture and to propose alternatives to the toxic pesticides widely used in the province of Kinshasa.
We support actions at the national level within the framework of the AgriCongo Alliance and at the provincial level (in Kongo –Central and Kinshasa).
