FAMILY FARMING IN ECUADOR
Despite significant growth over the last decade and, as a result, a general decline in poverty levels, rural areas are benefiting much less from these advances. 43% of people in rural areas still suffer from poverty, which particularly affects women and indigenous people.
In Ecuador, two agricultural models coexist: export agriculture and family farming. This coexistence implies a strong inequality in access to resources. Small farmers have the most problems in getting access to land, to water for irrigation and to credit.
THE WORK OF SOS FAIM IN ECUADOR
For more than 20 years, SOS Faim has been supporting family farming in Ecuador in order to fight poverty and food insecurity in rural areas.
We collaborate with a network of savings-credit cooperatives and a local NGO to improve access to financial services in rural areas, promote grouping into associations and market access for producers, support sustainable management of natural resources and facilitate local consultation processes.
Our support is concentrated in the rural areas of the provinces of Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Cotopaxi, Bolívar, Los Ríos, Manabí, Chimborazo, Zamora and Pichincha.
